Seraphine

SERAPHINE centers on Séraphine de Senlis (Yolande Moreau), a simple housekeeper whose brilliantly colorful canvases adorn some of the most famous galleries in the world. Wilhelm Uhde, a German art critic and collector (Ulrich Ukur) discovers her paintings while she is working for him as a maid in Senlis near Paris in the early part of the 20th century. Martin Provost s fictionalized and tragic portrait of this forgotten painter is a testament to creativity and the resilience of one woman s spirit. In 1913, the German collector Wilhelm Uhde, the first Picasso buyer and discoverer of acclaimed naïve primitive painter Le Douanier Rousseau, rents an apartment in Senlis in order to write and take a break from his Parisian life. He hires a cleaning lady, Séraphine, 48 years old. Some time later, while visiting the home of a prominent local family, he notices a small painting on wood. His surprise is great when he finds out that it is by none other than Séraphine. A poignant and unexpected relationship then develops between the avant-garde art dealer and the visionary cleaning lady. ...Read more

Seraphine

Séraphine is an elegantly fictionalized biopic about 19th century modern primitive painter, Séraphine de Senlis, who was a contemporary of Henri Rousseau's. The tale spans approximately 25 years during which Séraphine and her champion, German art critic and collector, Wilhelm Uhde, survive two wars and drastic economic changes that affect the art market. Martin Provost's feature is completely character driven, and as such relies on Yolande Moreau's caring portrayal of the eccentric Séraphine, and Ulrich Tukur's calm, academic demeanor as Mr. Uhde. In Provost's telling of this virtually unknown story, Séraphine is a middle-aged woman working as a housekeeper in Senlis, France, when Uhde arrives as a guest and discovers that this odd woman is a talented visionary artist. Since Uhde's main focus is garnering respect and precious Parisian salon space for artists deemed "naive," it is an uncanny and fortuitous coincidence that he stumbles upon Séraphine. Scenes alternate primarily between those encounters between Séraphine and her new friend, and those depicting Séraphine's thought processes or unique working methods. Some of the most beauteous sequences unfold as Séraphine hunts pastoral stream banks for wild plants and soil samples she uses for paint pigment in her floral landscapes. This artist's religious upbringing clearly influences her piously austere lifestyle, and the film implies that the mania plaguing her is exacerbated by delusions of saintliness. Indeed, the film does a wonderful job of showing the subtleties of Séraphine's mental illness in both positive and negative lights. It also elucidates the tragic political circumstances that prevented Séraphine from becoming as renowned as Rousseau, which doubles the story's sense of improbability and chance meeting. The film, on one level, revivifies a spectacular tale to rescue an artist from obscurity. More importantly, though, it poetically questions the amount of luck involved in survival by asking how much control one ultimately has over one's own life. --Trinie Dalton ...Read more

Warrior

Some men make their peace by hugging it out, but the men in Warrior communicate through their fists. Paddy Condon (Nick Nolte) trained his sons to be ultimate fighting champions, but alcohol, divorce, and a span of 14 years has driven them apart. Now Brendan (Animal Kingdom's Joel Edgerton) works as a science teacher, while Tommy (Tom Hardy, looking even burlier than he did in Bronson) has returned to Pittsburgh in the wake of his mother's death. He contacts his estranged father only because he wants to fight again. Paddy knows better than to ask what he's been doing in the meantime, but details of Tommy's time in the marines come to light just as his brother also plans a return to the ring, a move his wary wife (House's Jennifer Morrison) supports only because they'll lose their home otherwise. It's a foregone conclusion that the brothers will face each other in Atlantic City for the mixed martial arts competition with the million prize, though Miracle director Gavin O'Connor makes the meeting surprisingly believable by capturing the bouts that lead up to the main event. Throughout, Tommy fights like Tyson, knocking out opponents in a single blow, while Brendan wears them down through dogged persistence. The actors give it their all, but O'Connor stretches his underwritten script too far, leaving Tommy overly enigmatic, so it's fortunate that Brendan emerges as a more fully rounded figure, proving that Edgerton's move from the stage to the screen was a wise course of action. --Kathleen C. The Black Velvet Gown

In the spirit of Thomas Hardy and revisiting the countryside of D.H. Lawrence, The Black Velvet Gown is a classic tale of overcoming impoverished means. Set and filmed on location in Northumberland in northeastern England, the countryside and stark gray sky provide the dramatic backdrop for this story, which takes place in the 19th century. A widowed mother and her three children become servants in a reclusive man's household. The family brings the lonely academic joy and laughter and in exchange he bestows upon them his knowledge of books. It was unheard of for servants to be educated and literate, however, and after the master dies it's up to the mother and her daughter to overcome the narrow-minded prejudices held by society and create a liberated life on their own terms. Based on the bestselling novel by Catherine Cookson, The Black Velvet Gown is an entertaining watch. --Samantha Allen Storey ...Read more

Oscar® winner Vanessa Redgrave (Atonement, Julia) stars in this HBO Films adaptation of writer/actor Wallace Shawn's deeply personal play about the high cost of enlightenment, and the ever-widening gap between those who have and those who have not. Redgrave plays a nameless woman from a privileged world, suffering from a sense of disconnection from her comfortable life, who travels to a country (also nameless) in the throes of civil war. Suddenly deliriously ill, she confronts an internal chorus of conflicting voices: dreams of comfort from her past, images of violence, accusations of indifference, and cold-blooded arguments in favor of oppression. The central question: what, if anything, is a morally consistent way to live in the world as it is? ...Read more

Academy Award® nominees Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum) reteam in this action-packed thriller. Damon stars as Roy Miller, a rogue U.S. Army officer who must hunt through covert and faulty intelligence hidden on foreign soil before war escalates in an unstable region. Also starring Academy Award® nominees Greg Kinnear and Amy Ryan, Green Zone is “one hell of a thriller” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). ...Read more

Green Zone

Matt Damon reteams with his Bourne Supremacy director to create a thriller grounded in contemporary politics: the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Chief Warrant Officer Roy Miller (Damon) travels across war-torn Iraq, pursuing the intelligence he's been given, but every site indicated comes up empty of WMDs. Investigating the source of the intelligence, he finds himself caught between CIA agent Martin Brown (Brendan Gleeson, 28 Days Later) and politician Clark Poundstone (Greg Kinnear, Little Miss Sunshine) over the identity of "Magellan," the supposed source. As Miller tracks down an Iraqi general, he ends up further and further afield, facing danger from all sides. It's hard to say which is the greater accomplishment--that Green Zone manages to turn a still-volatile political issue into a propulsive action movie, or that it manages to depict Iraqi people as individuals with a wide range of responses to what's happened to their country. Damon's performance is low-key but effective as Miller tries to maintain some semblance of moral clarity in a circumstance that muddies everything. Also featuring Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone) as a compromised journalist and Khalid Abdalla (The Kite Runner) as an Iraqi civilian who gets dragged into far more than he expected. --Bret Fetzer ...Read more

The Dark Knight (Two-Disc Special Edition)

The Dark Knight arrives with tremendous hype (best superhero movie ever? posthumous Oscar for Heath Ledger?), and incredibly, it lives up to all of it. But calling it the best superhero movie ever seems like faint praise, since part of what makes the movie great--in addition to pitch-perfect casting, outstanding writing, and a compelling vision--is that it bypasses the normal fantasy element of the superhero genre and makes it all terrifyingly real. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) is Gotham City's new district attorney, charged with cleaning up the crime rings that have paralyzed the city. He enters an uneasy alliance with the young police lieutenant, Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman), and Batman (Christian Bale), the caped vigilante who seems to trust only Gordon--and whom only Gordon seems to trust. They make progress until a psychotic and deadly new player enters the game: the Joker (Heath Ledger), who offers the crime bosses a solution--kill the Batman. Further complicating matters is that Dent is now dating Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, after Katie Holmes turned down the chance to reprise her role), the longtime love of Batman's alter ego, Bruce Wayne.

In his last completed role before his tragic death, Ledger is fantastic as the Joker, a volcanic, truly frightening force of evil. And he sets the tone of the movie: the world is a dark, dangerous place where there are no easy choices. Eckhart and Oldman also shine, but as good as Bale is, his character turns out rather bland in comparison (not uncommon for heroes facing more colorful villains). Director-cowriter Christopher Nolan (Memento) follows his critically acclaimed Batman Begins with an even better sequel that sets itself apart from notable superhero movies like Spider-Man 2 and Iron Man because of its sheer emotional impact and striking sense of realism--there are no suspension-of-disbelief superpowers here. At 152 minutes, it's a shade too long, and it's much too intense for kids. But for most movie fans--and not just superhero fans--The Dark Knight is a film for the ages. --David Horiuchi

On the DVD
Unlike the Blu-ray disc, The Dark Knight on DVD is completely in 2.40:1 aspect ratio. You can, however, watch the six IMAX scenes separately. Also on disc 2 are "Gotham Uncovered: The Creation of a Scene," which is behind-the-scenes footage about the Bat suit, the Bat pod, and the music; eight-minute segments of Gotham Central, a faux-news program that gives some background to events in the movie; plus a variety of trailers, poster art, and more. Last, there's a digital copy of the film compatible with iTunes and Windows Media (download code expires 12/9/09). --David Horiuchi ...Read more
